Etsy's fee schedule is not complicated, but it is arranged so that a quick mental estimate is almost always optimistic. Three separate charges land on an ordinary sale, two of them are percentages of a number larger than the item price, and one of them is charged again every time a listing renews. The calculator above puts all of them on one screen with the arithmetic shown, so you can check it against your own payment account rather than taking a single figure on trust.
What Etsy charges on one sale
Every sale that goes through Etsy Payments attracts three fees. The listing fee is a flat $0.20 and is charged whether or not the item sells; a listing lasts four months, and an auto-renewing listing is charged another $0.20 each time one sells and reposts. The transaction fee is 6.5% of the total order amount. The payment processing fee is a percentage plus a flat amount, set by the country your bank account is in.
The word doing the work in the second one is total. Etsy charges the 6.5% against the item price plus whatever you charged for shipping and gift wrap, so if you price shipping at exactly what the label costs you, you lose 6.5% of the postage as well. Free shipping does not avoid this — it moves the same money into the item price, where the same percentage still finds it.
Etsy payment processing fee: why it varies by country
Payment processing is a genuinely separate charge from the transaction fee, and it is easy to double-count or miss entirely because it appears as its own line on your payment account. In the United States it is 3% plus $0.25 per order. Etsy is clear that both halves vary by country, following the location of your bank account, and the flat portion matters far more on small orders than large ones: a $0.25 fixed charge is half a percent of a $50 sale and five percent of a $5 one. This is the single strongest argument against very cheap listings, and it is visible in the breakdown as soon as you drop the price.
The two processing fields above are editable for exactly this reason. The US pair is the one this page can verify against Etsy's own published documentation, so it is the default; if you sell from elsewhere, replace them with the pair Etsy shows for your country and the rest of the calculation follows.
Offsite Ads fee calculator: when Etsy takes 15% or 12%
Offsite Ads promotes your listings on search engines and social platforms, and you pay nothing until one of those ads produces a sale. When it does, Etsy charges an advertising fee on the whole order total on top of everything above. Shops that have always made less than $10,000 in any consecutive 365-day period pay 15%; shops that have made $10,000 or more pay a discounted 12%, and that lower rate stays for the life of the shop. Past that threshold, participation is no longer optional.
The fee is capped at $100 per order, which is the part worth knowing if you sell anything expensive: the cap starts to bite at around a $667 order on the standard rate. Set the Offsite Ads control above to the rate that applies to your shop and the fee joins the breakdown as its own line, so you can see what an ad-attributed sale actually leaves you compared with an organic one. For many small-margin items the answer is uncomfortable, and knowing it before you price is the point.
Etsy profit margin calculator: reading the margin figure
Margin here is profit as a percentage of what the buyer paid, after Etsy's fees and after your own materials and postage. It is the figure to compare across listings, because the raw profit number rewards expensive items automatically while the percentage tells you whether the listing is actually working.
Two habits make the number more useful. Enter the postage you genuinely pay for the label rather than what you charge, since the gap between the two is a real cost that hides inside a shipping profit that was never there. - On a typical Etsy Payments sale in the United States, Etsy takes a $0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee, and a payment processing fee of 3% plus $0.25. The transaction fee and the payment processing fee are both charged on the total order — the item price plus any shipping you charged the buyer — not on the item price alone, which is why a rough estimate based on the item price consistently comes out too low. On a $45 item with $6 shipping that works out at $0.20 plus $3.32 plus $1.78, or $5.30 against a $51 order. If the sale was attributed to an Offsite Ad, add 15% or 12% of the order total on top of that.
- Does Etsy charge fees on shipping?
- Yes. Etsy's own fee documentation is explicit that the 6.5% transaction fee applies to the total cost of the item along with shipping and gift wrap, if you charge your customers for those, and payment processing is likewise calculated on the total sale price rather than the item alone. This catches out sellers who set shipping to exactly what the label costs them and expect to break even on it — you will be a few percent short every time. The calculator above asks for shipping charged and postage paid as separate fields precisely so that gap is visible rather than buried.
- What is the Etsy payment processing fee?
- It is a separate charge from the 6.5% transaction fee, taken by Etsy Payments for handling the money itself, and it is made up of a percentage plus a flat amount. In the United States it is 3% plus $0.25 per order. Etsy states that this rate and percentage vary by country, following the location of your bank account rather than the buyer's, so a seller in Germany, Canada or Australia pays a different pair. That is why the calculator lets you type your own percentage and flat amount over the US defaults instead of hard-coding one country's numbers into the answer.
- Why is my Etsy profit lower than I expected?
- Usually one of three things. The percentages are charged on the order total including shipping, so free shipping funded out of the item price is quietly taxed at 9.5% before processing. The listing fee is charged again each time an auto-renewing listing sells and reposts, so a fast-selling item pays $0.20 repeatedly rather than once. And if the order came through Offsite Ads, a further 15% or 12% of the order total comes off the same sale. Put all three into the calculator at once and the gap between the price you set and the money that lands usually explains itself.
- How do I calculate my Etsy profit margin?
- Take what actually lands in your payment account after every Etsy fee, subtract what the item cost you to make and what you paid for postage, then divide that by the total the buyer paid. The calculator does this for you and shows the margin as a percentage of the order total, so two listings at different price points can be compared directly. It deliberately shows a dash rather than 0% when there is no order to divide by — a zero margin is a claim about a sale, and a blank form has not made one.
- Are there Etsy fees this calculator does not include?
- Yes, and they are named on the page rather than folded silently into a number. Sellers in the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Spain and Turkey pay a Regulatory Operating Fee that Etsy sets per country; anyone whose listing currency differs from their payment currency pays a currency conversion fee; and Etsy Ads is a daily budget you set rather than a fee on a sale, so it is not a per-order deduction at all. Sales tax is also excluded, because in most US states Etsy collects and remits it as a marketplace facilitator and it never reaches you.
