eBay Fee Calculator

Work out eBay's final value fee, per-order fee and your real profit on a US sale — including the fee eBay charges on the shipping you collected.

What eBay charges the percentage on

$0.00 item price + $0.00 shipping = $0.00

The final value fee is charged on the total the buyer paid, shipping included — not on the item price alone. That is the single most common reason an eBay payout comes in lower than expected.

Not counted here: sales tax (eBay charges the final value fee on the tax it collects too, so your real fee is a little higher), the 1.65% international fee on sales delivered outside the US, optional listing upgrades such as Bold or a reserve price, the $20 dispute fee, and the surcharge on accounts rated Below Standard. Store subscribers, vehicles and eBay sites other than eBay.com are on different schedules entirely.

Enter what the buyer pays you and what the item cost you, and this works out every fee eBay charges on a US sale, the payout that lands in your account, and what is left once your own cost is taken off. The figures come from eBay's published selling fees page for eBay.com, for sellers without a Store subscription; the date they were last checked is printed beside the result with a link to the source, so you can verify our arithmetic against eBay's own.

eBay final value fee calculator: what the percentage is charged on

The final value fee is a percentage of the total amount of the sale, and that phrase is doing a lot of work. eBay defines it as the item price, any handling charges, any shipping the buyer paid, sales tax, and any other applicable fees. Sellers routinely multiply the fee percentage by the item price alone and come up short on every order they ship.

The practical consequence is that shipping is not a fee-free lane. A $40 item with $12 shipping and a $52 item with free shipping are charged identically, because eBay is looking at the $52 either way. Deciding between the two is a decision about search placement and buyer psychology, not about fees.

Most categories charge 13.6% up to $7,500 and 2.35% on the portion above. Books, movies and music are the expensive end at 15.3%; guitars and basses are the cheap end at 6.7%. Jewellery, handbags and athletic shoes are the odd ones out — they do not tier by portion, they move the entire sale to a lower rate once it crosses a threshold, so a jewellery sale of $5,000.01 is charged 9% on all of it rather than 15% on the first $5,000.

eBay seller fee breakdown: every line on the invoice

The calculator prints each charge on its own row, including the rows that come to nothing, because a fee you cannot see is a fee you cannot plan around:

  • Final value fee — the percentage, split across bands when the sale crosses one, so you can see exactly which band produced which number.
  • Per-order fee — $0.30 on orders of $10.00 or less, $0.40 above that. It is charged once per order, not once per item, and eBay waives it entirely on athletic-shoe sales of $150 or more.
  • Insertion fee — nothing at all until you have used the 250 zero insertion fee listings every seller gets each month, then $0.35 per listing in most categories. Guitars and basses are free regardless.

Deliberately absent: sales tax, the 1.65% international fee on deliveries outside the US, optional listing upgrades, the $20 dispute fee, and the surcharge on accounts rated Below Standard. Each of those needs information the page cannot know, and inventing a plausible default would make the total look complete while being wrong.

eBay profit calculator: what you actually keep

Payout is not profit. Once the item cost is entered, the calculator subtracts it and reports both the profit in dollars and the margin as a percentage of what the buyer paid. A loss is shown as a negative number rather than clamped to zero — sourcing a $90 item and clearing $58 on it is exactly the result worth seeing before you list the next one.

Watch the effective fee rate on small sales. The flat per-order fee is a rounding error on a $400 listing and a serious tax on an $8 one, where it can push the real rate several points above the headline percentage. If your margin looks thin on low-value items, that flat fee is usually the reason, and bundling items into a single order is the lever that moves it.

Questions

How much does eBay take from a sale?
In most categories eBay charges 13.6% of the total amount of the sale up to $7,500, then 2.35% on anything above that, plus a per-order fee of $0.30 on orders of $10.00 or less or $0.40 on orders over $10.00. Some categories differ sharply: books, movies and music are 15.3%, jewellery and watches are 15% up to $5,000 and 9% above it, and guitars and basses are only 6.7%. On a $40 item with $12 shipping in a standard category that works out at $7.47 in fees on the $52 the buyer paid — about 14.4% once the flat per-order fee is folded in, which is why the effective rate on a small sale always runs above the headline percentage.
Does eBay charge fees on shipping?
Yes. eBay's own wording is that the total amount of the sale includes the item price, any handling charges, any shipping costs collected from the buyer, sales tax and any other applicable fees — so the final value fee percentage is applied to the shipping the buyer paid you, not just the item price. This is the single most common reason a payout comes in lower than a seller expected. It also means charging shipping separately instead of building it into the price saves nothing: eBay's cut of $40 plus $12 shipping is identical to its cut of a $52 item with free shipping.
What is the eBay final value fee?
The final value fee is the percentage eBay takes when your item sells, and it replaced the separate payment-processing fee that used to be charged on top — there is no additional card-processing percentage to add. It is charged once per item on the total amount of the sale, and in most categories it steps down to 2.35% on the portion above $7,500. A few categories work differently: jewellery, handbags and athletic shoes move the whole sale to a lower rate once it passes a threshold rather than tiering the portions, so a handbag selling for $2,000.01 is charged 9% on all of it.
Why is my eBay fee higher than the percentage in the fee table?
Three things usually account for the gap. The per-order fee is a flat $0.30 or $0.40 regardless of the sale size, so it inflates the effective rate on cheap items far more than expensive ones. The percentage is charged on shipping and on the sales tax eBay collects, neither of which is in the price you listed. And an account rated Below Standard, or one with a Very High rate of 'item not as described' returns, is charged an extra 5% to 7% on top of the applicable final value fees. If your figure still does not reconcile, check whether the listing carried an optional upgrade such as Bold or a reserve price.
How many free listings do I get on eBay each month?
Every seller gets up to 250 zero insertion fee listings a month, and more with an eBay Store subscription. Once that allowance is used, insertion fees are $0.35 per listing in most categories — charged per listing and per category, so listing in two categories costs it twice, charged again on every relist, and non-refundable if the item never sells. Good 'Til Cancelled listings renew automatically once per calendar month and are charged an insertion fee on each renewal, which is the line that surprises sellers with long-running inventory.
Is the eBay fee calculated before or after sales tax?
After. Sales tax that eBay collects from the buyer is part of the total amount of the sale that the final value fee percentage is applied to, even though eBay remits that tax and it never reaches you. This calculator does not model it, because the rate depends on the buyer's delivery address and you cannot know it while you are setting a price — so treat the fee figure here as a floor. On a sale with 6% sales tax the real final value fee runs roughly 6% higher than the number shown.
