The Nintendo Switch Pro Controller reports through the same underlying Gamepad API as every other brand this page tests, but two things about it are genuinely different from an Xbox or PlayStation pad: its face-button layout is mirrored relative to Xbox's, and its most talked-about hardware feature — HD Rumble — is completely invisible to a browser.
Why B and A are swapped from Xbox at the same button index
This is the single most common point of confusion testing a Switch Pro Controller against a tool built with Xbox conventions in mind, so it's worth being precise. The Gamepad API's standard mapping fixes button POSITION by index — index 0 is always the bottom face button, 1 is always the right-hand one, 2 the left, 3 the top — identically across every brand. What differs is which letter each brand prints on that position. Xbox puts A at the bottom and B on the right. Nintendo puts B at the bottom and A on the right, a layout it has used consistently since the Super Nintendo, long before Xbox's convention existed. Neither is "correct" — they're two different standards that happen to occupy the same four physical slots, and this page's wireframe switches which set of letters it shows based on which controller it detects so what's on screen matches what's printed on your actual pad.
Testing the Switch Pro Controller's sticks for drift
Nintendo controllers as a family have a well-known reputation for stick drift, largely from Joy-Con reporting, but the Pro Controller uses the same underlying stick mechanism at a sturdier scale and wears the same way over time. Let go of both sticks completely on this page and watch the resting reading settle — close to zero on both axes is healthy. A persistent non-zero resting offset, especially one that's grown since the controller was new, points at the same worn-potentiometer issue Joy-Cons are known for, just less frequently reported because the Pro Controller's larger stick housing tends to hold up longer under equivalent use.
ZL and ZR as analog triggers
Unlike the Joy-Con's digital SL/SR, the Switch Pro Controller's ZL and ZR are genuinely analog, reporting a 0-100% range on this page's trigger panel rather than a simple on/off. Squeeze gently and the fill bar should rise smoothly — that range is what lets a Switch game read partial acceleration or throttle. A ZL or ZR that only ever shows fully empty or fully pressed with nothing in between points at a hardware or driver issue with the analog sensor rather than anything wrong with this page.
What HD Rumble and gyro can't show you here
The Switch Pro Controller's two most distinctive hardware features — HD Rumble's fine-grained haptic feedback and its built-in gyroscope for motion controls — are both driven through Nintendo's own protocol, and neither is part of the Gamepad API standard this page reads. There is no axis for tilt and no way to trigger or measure rumble output from a browser. What this page covers instead is everything the standard mapping DOES expose: both sticks, both analog triggers, all four face buttons under their real B/A/Y/X names, the L/R shoulder buttons, the d-pad, and the Home/Plus/Minus system buttons — a complete check of the parts that fail mechanically, separate from the two features that make this controller distinctive in a Switch game.
Bluetooth versus USB-C for testing
A Switch Pro Controller connects to a PC the same way it connects to a Switch console — standard Bluetooth pairing, or a wired USB-C cable. Both register identically on this page once you press a button, since the Gamepad API doesn't distinguish connection method. If the controller isn't appearing at all, confirm it's actually paired at the OS level first; a controller that's connected but idle can still look undetected here until it registers a real button press, which browsers require before revealing any connected controller to a web page.

- Why does this tool show B where I'd expect A on my Switch Pro Controller?
- Because it's showing you the real label printed on your controller, not a mistake. Every standard-mapped gamepad reports its bottom face button at index 0, but which letter that physical position carries is a brand decision — Xbox calls it A, and Nintendo, following the same layout it has used since the Super Nintendo controller decades before Xbox existed, calls the SAME bottom position B. The right-hand position is B on Xbox and A on Switch Pro; the arrangement is a genuine mirror-swap between the two console families, not an error in either the controller or this page. - Does the Switch Pro Controller's HD Rumble show up on this page?
- No. HD Rumble is Nintendo's proprietary haptic feedback system, driven by the Switch console's own software, and it isn't part of the standard Gamepad API that browsers implement — there is no rumble output a web page can trigger or read back from any controller, Switch Pro included.
