Click before the colour changes and the round doesn't count at all: the test says so plainly and lets you try it again, rather than quietly timing something that wasn't a real reaction. Reading your result: best vs average
Your best round is the fastest single click of the five — a genuine data point, but also the one most likely to be a slightly lucky guess at when the signal was about to appear. Your average across all five rounds is the steadier number, because one unusually fast or unusually slow round gets balanced out by the other four. If you're comparing yourself against a friend, a past attempt, or a typical range, the average is the fairer number to use; the best is worth keeping around as your personal record for the day.
Why the test flags a click as "too early"
The whole point of the random delay between "armed" and "go" is that you cannot predict it — if you could, you'd be timing the countdown instead of reacting to the signal, and the result would measure your sense of rhythm rather than your reflexes. A click during that wait is caught as a false start on purpose: nothing was recorded for it, because there's nothing true to record. It doesn't cost you a round — the same round simply repeats with a fresh random delay, so a finished run is always five genuine reactions.
Reaction time test by age
Simple visual reaction time is generally quickest in the late teens and twenties and lengthens gradually through adulthood — a broad trend that shows up across most studies of reaction time, not something specific to this page. It's a population-level pattern rather than a fixed schedule for any one person: how much sleep you got, whether you've had caffeine, how many times you've already taken a test like this one, and your general level of alertness right now can all shift your result by more than age alone typically would. Use "typical for my age" as loose context for your result, not as a precise number to hit.
How accurate is this measurement, really
The clock behind this test, performance.now(), is a monotonic timer built
for exactly this kind of elapsed-time measurement and is precise to a
fraction of a millisecond. Precision in the clock isn't the same thing as
precision in what you're measuring, though: the signal you're reacting to
only actually appears on your screen at your monitor's own refresh rate —
roughly every 16 milliseconds on a common 60Hz display, faster on a
high-refresh one — and your operating system, browser and mouse or
touchscreen each add a small amount of their own scheduling delay before
your click is registered. Both of those sit outside this page's control and
apply to every browser-based reaction test, not just this one. In practice,
that means a 20-30 millisecond gap between two of your rounds is closer to
noise than to a real difference in how fast you reacted.
Reaction time and gaming aim
A fast "aim reaction test" result measures one ingredient of good aim — how quickly you react once something appears — not aim as a whole. Tracking a moving target, correcting an overshoot mid-flick, and the muscle memory built from hours in the actual game all matter just as much, which is why plenty of players with an ordinary reaction time still aim well. Treat a run here as a read on your reflexes today, worth repeating occasionally to track fatigue or improvement, rather than a stand-in for practice in the game itself.

- What's a good reaction time?
- Most people react to a simple visual signal somewhere between 200 and 350 milliseconds, so a result in that range is entirely typical rather than slow. Under 200 milliseconds is on the fast edge of what people manage — a single lucky round that low is common, but an average that low across all five rounds is a genuinely quick result. Above 350 milliseconds usually points to fatigue, a moment of distraction, or a hand that wasn't already resting near the pad when the round began, rather than to anything wrong with your hardware.
- Why did the test say I clicked too early?
- The pad waits a random, hidden length of time — between 1.5 and 4 seconds — before it changes colour, precisely so you can't predict the exact moment and time the countdown instead of the signal. A click before that colour change is a false start: nothing about that click measures your reaction, because the thing it was supposed to react to hadn't happened yet. Rather than inventing a number for it, the test throws the round away and lets you try it again — a completed run is always exactly five real, measured clicks, never five attempts of mixed quality.
- Does reaction time get slower with age?
- In general, yes — simple reaction time tends to be quickest in the late teens and twenties, then lengthens gradually through adulthood, a pattern seen across most studies of visual reaction time regardless of the exact test used. The change is gradual rather than a cliff at any particular birthday, and it's a population-level trend, not a guarantee about any one person: sleep, caffeine, practice with this exact kind of test, and simply how alert you are right now all move your own result by more than a few years of age typically would. Comparing your result against "typical for your age" is reasonable context; comparing it against a specific age-banded number would be more precise than this kind of test can honestly promise.
- How accurate is a browser reaction time test?
- The clock itself is precise — this test uses performance.now(), a monotonic timer built for exactly this kind of elapsed-time measurement, accurate to a fraction of a millisecond and immune to the small jumps a wall clock can make. What it can't get around is everything downstream of the clock: your monitor only actually shows the colour change at its own refresh rate (about every 16 milliseconds at a common 60Hz, less on a high-refresh display), and your operating system, browser and input device all add their own small, variable delay on the way back. None of that is unique to this page — it's true of every browser-based reaction test — so treat differences of less than roughly 20-30 milliseconds between two results as noise rather than a real change in your reflexes.
- Can a reaction time test help with gaming aim?
- It measures one narrow ingredient of aim — how fast you react to something appearing — rather than aim itself, which also depends on tracking a moving target, correcting your own overshoot, and muscle memory built from hours of practice in the actual game. A faster reaction time is generally an advantage, but plenty of players with an average reaction time still aim well because the other skills carry more of the weight. Real factors that move your result run-to-run include tiredness, how recently you last did something requiring quick reactions, whether your hand was already resting on the mouse or trackpad, and plain attention lapsing for a fraction of a second on any one round. That's exactly why the test reports an average across five rounds rather than a single number — one unusually fast or slow round shows up in your best or worst, but the average is a steadier read on where you actually are today.
